TREADING WAVES

TREADING WAVES

A new art exhibition “Treading Waves” by Zen-In Architects is currently on display in our atrium at The Opposite House. Visually stunning and thought-provoking, the exhibition gives traditional objects and culture a contemporary and artistic new meaning.

Composed of ceramic roof tiles, “Treading Waves” challenges people’s habitual memory of hotel spaces and presents the natural ocean in an indoor space. The exhibition repurposes traditional roof tiles and uses them to form the motion of waves on the ground emphasising the contrast between rigid materials and fluidity of nature. Lights positioned beneath the tiles create a scattering effect that mimics the way sunlight is refracted underwater. “Mova” (ink tiles) combines traditional ink-painting with roof tiles, displaying a free and fluid as well as silent and solid aesthetic. It’s inspiration originated from the reinterpretation of Chinese culture and the integration of the traditional and contemporary. It’s a meditation on the relationship between modern and traditional Shanghai.

Founded in 2015, Zen-In Architects is an innovative and pragmatic design firm whose work revolves around two key words: Renewal and Innovation.

Renewal: We explore the social significance and spatial spirit of architecture in the urban dimension, and devote to the adaptable transformation design of old cities, traditional villages and towns, historical blocks and industrial heritage areas under the requirements of new industrial functions.

Innovation: We attempt to find new spatial forms and behavioural organisation in order to reconstruct new broad space fields.
