DOING OUR PART, SMALL AND BIG

Sustainability is what's good for the environment and we can make it into a healthy routine too. Our Security Department takes the stairs instead of the elevator whenever we can to do our part for energy conservation – and the exercise isn't bad either.

To me, sustainability means that we use our planet’s resources without compromising how future generations live. I’ve been proud of the efforts my team and I have put in replacing the energy efficient lighting at The Upper House throughout the year.

HOUSES IN ACTION

THE OPPOSITE HOUSE

One of Beijing's first environmentally conscious buildings by design, The Opposite House takes advantage of natural light and is largely built from locally sourced reclaimed material. And to minimise waste, our team has shifted to using more biodegradable materials for items such as rubbish bags, while all leftover soaps are donated to not-for-profit organisation Soap Cycling.

THE UPPER HOUSE

It's a greener hotel experience at The Upper House where we've eliminated all single-use plastics from in-room consumables, installed filtration taps for unlimited drinking water and sourced natural bathroom amenities in recyclable aluminium tubes. We're a Founding Collective Member of Belu Hong Kong, a UK-based social enterprise, with our water filtration system at Salisterra and upcycle lightly used bathroom amenities with Soap Cycling. We celebrate sustainability too – every holiday season we commission a designer to create a one-of-a-kind, "green" Christmas tree.

THE TEMPLE HOUSE

The Temple House is an avid advocate of the 3Rs concept – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – in waste management. By saying no to plastics, all straws, hampers, room amenity wrappers and toothbrushes have been replaced with products made from biodegradable materials while water offered in-room is bottled in glass. We also find ways to reuse and recycle in our kitchens, for example, installing food waste processor ORCA. Our annual sustainable celebrations spotlighting recycled materials have become a tradition every Christmas.

THE MIDDLE HOUSE

At The Middle House, every guest experience is designed to be eco-friendly, with airport transfers via hybrid car, complimentary House bicycles and made-to-order breakfasts to minimise food waste. Our kitchen works with local farmers to source fresh ingredients and products. Reclaimed water system for toilet flushing and LED lamps are installed throughout the property to improve energy efficiency.
