The House Collective is arriving in Tokyo, with its first location outside China.
The House Collective creates spaces that are both inspiring and effortless across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu. The as-yet unnamed new House due to be completed in year 2027, which will be part of a prestigious mixed-used development in collaboration with Tokyu Corporation and Tokyu Department Store (together, Tokyu Group) and L Catterton Real Estate (LCRE).
Swire Hotel’s Deputy Chairman Toby Smith said, “Witnessing the growth of The House Collective is an extremely proud moment for us as we look to expand into new cities throughout the Asia Pacific region. We’re delighted to be able to bring our distinctive design and people-first approach in hospitality to Tokyo."
Set on the site of the iconic Tokyu Department Store’s flagship store, our new House will be part of the Shibuya Upper West Project that sits at the edge of the fashionable Shibuya district, the affluent residential area of Shoto and the cultural neighbourhoods of Kamiyamacho and Tomigaya. Here, the bustling thrum of the city will fall away as art, culture and elevated experiences create an extraordinary and inspiring stay for guests. The project aspires to become Tokyo's first true “Urban Retreat" concept – an enclave of peace and relaxation in the bustle of the city. A destination in the heart of Tokyo that combines luxury hotel and residences with high quality retail, unique dining, art and cultural facilities.
At the heart of our brand are the individuals who bring our Houses to life. Our people. Captivating and characterful, our team injects passion and creativity into everything they do. We see our Houses as a unique communal ground where people from different parts of the world come together.
“What makes our House a ‘home’ is our people – they are the heart and soul of our brand. They share an innate love of life and delight in spending meaningful time with our guests.”

“We want a stay at The Temple House to be a uniquely Chengdu experience, one you can’t have elsewhere. An experience rooted in local culture.”

“The House Collective is all about our people and it’s been a thrill building the family of The Middle House, Shanghai. We have such characters in the team - charismatic and with their own flair - a bit like the city itself.”

Art and culture are at the core of who we are as a brand. They capture the spirit of The House Collective – an openness to the world, to different local and global cultures and expressions of individuality. Each House tells its story through its design, cultural experiences and carefully curated art pieces as well as our art programme “Encounters Across Cultures.” Just like our Houses, the new development which will be home to our House in Tokyo is designed with art and culture at the forefront, connected closely to the cultural institution Bunkamura.
At our Houses, we want to create experiences that don’t just feel and look good but that have a positive impact on the world. Sustainable practices have become a conscious part of our day-to-day operation, with the ultimate goal of inspiring awareness and action in our guests, partners and communities towards energy conservation, water conservation and waste management. Our new House in Tokyo aims to go greener, with ambitious sustainability goals and acclaimed Norwegian architects Snøhetta, who specialise in sustainable spaces, leading on design for the Shibuya Upper West Project.
Charming. Weird. Wonderful. Our Houses are cultural playgrounds with exciting and unexpected restaurants and bars, immersive wellness experiences and a rich calendar of talks and events covering topics from art, fashion and design to gastronomy. In Tokyo, we’re looking forward to the same as the project area of our new House brings together luxury retail, extraordinary dining, and art and culture for a distinctive experience.
