Where Every House Has Its Own Story

The Tokyo Chapter

The House Collective is arriving in Tokyo, with its first location outside China.

The as-yet unnamed House is due to be completed in year 2027, and will be part of a prestigious mixed-used development in collaboration with Tokyu Corporation and Tokyu Department Store (together, Tokyu Group) and L Catterton Real Estate (LCRE).

Swire Hotel’s Deputy Chairman Toby Smith said, “Witnessing the growth of The House Collective is an extremely proud moment for us as we look to expand into new cities throughout the Asia Pacific region. We’re delighted to be able to bring our distinctive design and people-first approach in hospitality to Tokyo."

A New House in Tokyo

Set on the site of the iconic Tokyu Department Store’s flagship store, our new House will be part of the Shibuya Upper West Project that sits at the edge of the fashionable Shibuya district, the affluent residential area of Shoto and the cultural neighbourhoods of Kamiyamacho and Tomigaya.

Here, the bustling thrum of the city will fall away as art, culture and elevated experiences create an extraordinary and inspiring stay for guests. The project aspires to become Tokyo's first true “Urban Retreat" concept – an enclave of peace and relaxation in the bustle of the city.

BEGIN: OUR TOKYO STORY STARTS NOW

In Spring 2023, we hosted a culinary and cultural experience in Tokyo to celebrate The House Collective's new beginnings. Symbolic of rebirth and renewal, Japan's sakura cherry blossoms at their peak set the backdrop for the evening. Friends and guests of our Houses gathered as the night brought together a cross-cultural dance performance with tastes of our Michelin-starred cuisine and tea-inspired House cocktails.

BEGIN: ENCOUNTERS ACROSS CULTURES 2023

Time x Space x Evolution. A narrative told by five dance artists across different ages, nationalities and dance disciplines. Our belief that creativity comes best from crossing cultures is the driving force behind our art programme Encounters Across Cultures.

This extension of the programme led the audience through the story of honoured tradition, modernity, harmony and new possibilities as dancers engaged and connected through contrasting movements and spaces.

Uniquely Imagined Dining

Besides culture and art, uniquely imagined dining is central to The House Collective experience. To bring a taste of this to Tokyo, Chef Tony of The Temple House curated special canapés, which he created to complement Chinese-tea inspired cocktails. Guests were able to enjoy these flavours from our Michelin-starred Mi Xun Teahouse while toasting to our new chapter in Japan with House cocktails designed by our mixologists.

The spring mood of Chengdu in a glass. Rose and grapefruit mingle with the smokey taste of lapsang souchong tea.

Tea Time - With Me (The Upper House, Hong Kong)

A non-alcoholic cocktail full of fruity and floral notes. Restorative sakura tea infused with fresh raspberry, homemade mango shrub and lychee.

HOUSES ARE FULL OF PERSONALITY

At the heart of our brand are the individuals who bring our Houses to life. Our people. Captivating and characterful, our team injects passion and creativity into everything they do. We see our Houses as a unique communal ground where people from different parts of the world come together.

An Artful Journey

Art and culture are at the core of who we are as a brand. They capture the spirit of The House Collective – an openness to the world, to different local and global cultures and expressions of individuality. Each House tells its story through its design, cultural experiences and carefully curated art pieces as well as our art programme “Encounters Across Cultures.” Just like our Houses, the new development which will be home to our House in Tokyo is designed with art and culture at the forefront, connected closely to the cultural institution Bunkamura.

Encounters Across Cultures 2021

The latest edition of our art programme brought together creators in dance, film and interactive design for a journey through architecture and dance that crossed cultures. Chapter One explored the textures and geometry of our Shanghai and Beijing Houses whilst Chapter Two juxtaposed the serenity of our Hong Kong House with Chengdu’s many contrasts.

Encounters Across Cultures 2019

The inaugural year of our art programme featured unique site-specific work across our Houses, inspired by the Chinese five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Under the theme ‘Seeds of Life’, award-winning multidisciplinary artist Katja Loher worked with locally-based artists in the four Houses’ cities to create pieces that reflected each location’s distinct environment

Chefs Story

Each with a distinctive cooking style of their own, the three Chinese cuisine chefs of The House Collective came together to collaborate for the first time. Through a special limited-time menu inspired by memories of their hometowns in Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, the chefs told the story of the experiences that made them who they are today.

A Place to Appreciate from Every Angle

Our House in Beijing is as much a destination for art lovers as it is for travellers. Imagined as a contemporary art gallery, The Atrium at The Opposite House shows cutting-edge exhibitions regularly, like the visually stunning and thought-provoking installation “Treading Waves” by Zen-In Architects.

Art at our Houses

Art is our passion. It’s at the heart of our Houses. Adorning our interiors, hand-picked art pieces infuse all of our spaces with creativity and craftsmanship, in a showcase of local and international talent that captures the spirit and personality of each House from The Upper House’s tranquil serenity to The Middle House’s fashion-forward elegance.

A Greener Future

At our Houses, we want to create experiences that don’t just feel and look good but that have a positive impact on the world. Sustainable practices have become a conscious part of our day-to-day operation, with the ultimate goal of inspiring awareness and action in our guests, partners and communities towards energy conservation, water conservation and waste management. Our new House in Tokyo aims to go greener, with ambitious sustainability goals and acclaimed Norwegian architects Snøhetta, who specialise in sustainable spaces, leading on design for the Shibuya Upper West Project.

The Cycle Continues

Each year, The House Collective mooncake box sets celebrate sustainability. For the latest collection, we upcycled glass bottles and uniforms from each House into the boxes’ “jade” Ping An Kou amulets, which pay homage to the pendants families used to pass peace and safety down generations.

Greener Kitchens in our Houses

Our Houses have been reducing energy through Swire Properties’ Green Kitchen Initiatives, a platform to enhance sustainability by helping to reduce energy and water usage and improve air quality and waste management. The Green Kitchen Awards celebrate venues making an impact and named some of our restaurants with the highest “Three Leaf Rating” last year.

Upcycling Amenities for Good

At The Upper House, we work with Soap Cycling to collect lightly used bathroom amenities for redistribution to those in need whilst minimising landfill waste. For six months in 2019, we donated HK$60 from every room booking to help Soap Cycling distribute hygiene kits to frontline cleaners and communities, for a total of over HK$400,000.

Giving New Life

Every Christmas at The Temple House, we incorporate recycled materials as whimsical and thought-provoking festive decorations for our community-driven tree-lighting ceremony. We’ve featured recycled bamboo, recycled glass bottles from guest rooms, upcycled bottles from Tivano and Jing, used tea candle shells from Daci Temple and repurposed wooden floorboards from our House.

Uniquely Imagined Experiences

Charming. Weird. Wonderful. Our Houses are cultural playgrounds with exciting and unexpected restaurants and bars, immersive wellness experiences and a rich calendar of talks and events covering topics from art, fashion and design to gastronomy. In Tokyo, we’re looking forward to the same as the project area of our new House brings together luxury retail, extraordinary dining, and art and culture for a distinctive experience.

Inspiring Conversations #UpCloseWith

Up Close is our signature event series of intimate talks with cultural tastemakers and pioneers to spark thoughtful conversations, collaboration and ideas. Our recent talks have included cutting-edge artists, designers, advocates and entrepreneurs including Jane Goodall, Nick Knight and Phillip King.

Visionary Culinary Journeys

Set off on a journey of imaginative flavours and gastronomic experiences, from everyday dining to chef collaborations and Michelin-rated menus. Our restaurants and bars highlight the seasonal and the sublime, offering everything from expert Peking duck and plant-based Sichuanese to modern Italian and Mediterranean fare.

Bringing Community Together

Local communities give our Houses their individuality. We value supporting and building these connections through experiences like our Community Bartender Series, which features local tastemakers behind the bar and an underwater exhibition from local Shanghai swimwear brand and conservation advocates In Sharks We Trust.

Wellness as a Way of Life

Holistic therapies and sleek fitness facilities nourish body, mind and spirit at our Houses. We collaborate with different brands and partners for both physical and mental wellness sessions through a variety of formats, whether group class, virtual get-together or community events.

Tokyo, we’re on our way and we can’t wait to meet you there.
Our newest House couldn’t have a better city to call home.
