VOL 02

A MONTH OF CREATIVITY AND INSPIRATION

We’re never short of inspiration at our Houses.

Nourishing our creative soul keeps us passionate, engaged and searching for more. Through one-of-a-kind exhibitions, cross-cultural programming and exciting brand collaborations, our Houses are celebrating the arts and the senses this month.

A DIALOGUE BETWEEN PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE AT THE OPPOSITE HOUSE

This spring, The Opposite House is pleased to welcome “Infinite & Inconceivable Lust”, an exhibition of ceramic sculptures created by artist Yvan Deng. By bringing his fashion aesthetic together with traditional Chinese artifacts, this body of work inspires dialogue between the past and present, which in turn sparks a conversation for the future. The installation opens for public viewing in the Atrium of The Opposite House on February 22, 2022.

Recognised by top brands and publications, Deng's work has pushed boundaries by blending Expressionism with contemporary fashion scene. His ceramics and paintings are distinctly recognisable by depicting faces with Asian eyes, big earrings, and finely arched eyebrows.

The artworks in this series offer allegorical interpretations of eight willow leaf vases that symbolise the infinite. The vases work together as a canvas, with calligraphy selected from the ancient Chinese poem “The Goddess of the Luo River” adorned across the back and two dragons, representing two individuals and their fight to be together regardless of gender, across the front. A pink and red colour scheme is juxtaposed against the seriousness of the imagery and poetry.

Through Deng's whimsical and insightful work, the exhibition invites the audience to reflect on their relationships and ruminate on whether our lives are pre-determined or a creation of our own making.

Closing Chapter of Encounters Across Cultures

This month saw the final stop of our biennial art programme Encounters Across Cultures bring its immersive experience to The Temple House in Chengdu. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of our partners and supporters who, even in the face of such challenging times, helped us to make this cross-cultural and cross-border project come to life.

This year, our team of creators spanned dance, interactive design and more, to present an exploration of space and movement through architecture at each House.

Across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, the interactive installations invited audiences to move together with our dance artists, proving that to encounter is not just to experience; it's also to participate.

Though the programme was a success, getting there was no easy feat. Our Art Programme Lead Clarissa Tam and Curator & Producer Patsy Lo pulled together the entire team of international choreographers and dance artists, who never met before, to collaborate virtually across time zones and languages – even eventually enduring quarantines to work together.
